Loan Deferrment Information
Friends University sends all deferment letters to the National School Loan Clearinghouse (NSLC). Generally, students will ask this question because they have recently received a collection letter from their servicer. We recommend the following steps be taken when a student inquires about the status of their deferment.
  • Call the servicer to check the status of a loan. Frequently, the servicer has processed the deferment form between the time the letter was generated and the time the student received the letter through the mail. Toll-free telephone numbers for the largest services are as follows:
    • AFSA — (800) 835-4611
    • CHEMICAL BANK — (800) 648-4723
    • CITIBANK — (800) 967-2400
    • EDUCAID — (800) 776-2344
    • EDUSERV (Minn.) — (800) 678-6545
    • EDUSERV (NC) — (800) 342-5475
    • EDUSERV (Utah) — (800) 955-4286

    • GREAT LAKES — (800) 236-4300
    • PHEAA — (800) 233-0557
    • SALLIE MAE SERVICERS:

      • NEW ENGLAND — (800) 892-5321
      • PENNSYLVANIA — (800) 458-2080

  • If, after calling the servicer, it still appears that the deferment has not been processed, the students may call NSLC at 703-742-7791 and ask for a Student Service Representative. The representative will verify the date on which the deferment form was received by NSLC, the date the deferment was certified and mailed, the enrollment status that was certified and where the forms were sent.
  • If an emergency exists — for example, the student is 150 days delinquent and being threatened with default — NSLC will intervene on the student's behalf by faxing another enrollment certification to the servicer. Further, NSLC will work with the servicer to ensure that the form is processed on a high-priority basis.
