International Students
Social Security Card Information
If an international student would like to work on campus at Friends University, they need to obtain a social security card first. With the assistance of the Center for Student Success, the student needs to complete/obtain the following documents:
Students will generally receive their Social Security Card within 30 days.
Individuals with an F-2 visa dependent status DO NOT have BCIS work authorization and therefore CANNOT be given a Social Security Card.
Curricular Practical Training or Internships
The Center for Student Success recognizes curricular practical training, as defined by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS), as an important option for international students at Friends University.
Curricular practical training (CPT) is a type of temporary employment for a student in F-1 status. Before a traditional undergraduate can apply for CPT, the student needs to be enrolled full-time for at least two consecutive semesters. Graduate students can start immediately after enrollment. The employment opportunity must be directly related to the academic program (e.g. an internship). The employment must also be directly related to the student's major and is only available prior to the completion of the degree.
The Center for Student Success requires two forms of documentation before CPT can be approved. A faculty advisor's letter of recommendation is needed to verify the work is relevant and vital to the student's education. Also, the employer must submit a letter of recommendation outlining the aspects of the position and how it relates to the student's academic program.
It is important to remember that other institutions with established Cooperative Education Programs may follow different processes for documentation.
The Center for Student Success wants all students to be successful and learn through opportunities in and out of the classroom. We are also committed to assisting students in following the guidelines set forth by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Health Insurance Requirements
To protect our international students and ensure that they will be able to receive necessary medical care, Friends University now requires all F-1 students to purchase health, repatriation and medical evacuation insurance.
You must either purchase this insurance through Friends University's exclusive insurance company, Student Assurance Services, OR show proof of insurance with another company. If you choose to get insured through another insurance company, you must have at least $50,000 of accident illness coverage, $10,000 of repatriation coverage and $10,000 of medical evacuation coverage and you must complete a Healthcare Insurance Waiver form that can be obtained through the Center for Student Success at the link below.
If you cannot prove you have insurance that meets the minimum requirements or have not purchased the insurance that Friends University recommends, you will not be able to register for the upcoming school term. No accommodations will be made to allow you to register first and pay later.
