Darcy Zabel

Dr. Darcy Zabel has a long history of working with literature. Her career began in New York City where she worked as an editorial assistant for St. Martin’s Press in the college textbook acquisitions division, eventually moving on to Garland Publishing’s fine arts reference and reprints division as an assistant editor.

Zabel transferred to the academia world to teach the importance of literature to college students, as well as write on her own. She has published several papers on subjects such as the failure of Western liberal feminism to address the needs of Caribbean women writers.

Some of most recent publications include essays on nineteenth century African American travel writer and missionary Nancy Prince for the Dictionary of Literary Biography, an interview with Opie Award winning African American playwright Robert O'Hara, and an essay on the poetry of African American writer Robert Hayden.

Zabel received a Bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College with Phi Beta Kappa cum laude, where she majored in English and minored in Religion. She then earned her masters and PhD degrees from the University of Connecticut in areas such as: Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States, World Literature in Translation, Literary Theory, and 19th and 20th century classic American Literature.

She worked for the University of Connecticut for six years as a tutor, teacher, ESL teacher, and English Program Coordinator for the University of Connecticut's Center for Academic Preparation and Student Support Services and a TRIO funded minority student /first generation college student recruitment and retention program.

Currently, Zabel is married to a native Kansan and has one son, Quinnehtukqut. Being from Maine, Zabel spends her summers along to rocky coasts and visiting lighthouses.
