One of the questions I regularly ask prospective or current students is, “If you have to live with yourself for 80-plus years, wouldn’t you want to be the most interesting person you can be?”
This question gets at the heart of what it means to be a liberal arts institution. A liberal arts education allows students to examine a wide variety of disciplines. They learn about arts, history, language, literature, science, politics and more, in addition to practical knowledge they need for their chosen career. This makes for well-rounded people who are more knowledgeable, fascinating and better prepared for a changing world throughout their lifetime. A liberal arts education prepares students to be lifelong learners so they can change and adapt as life changes.
After serving as president at Friends University for almost 20 years, I have seen how our institution transforms students’ lives. Our founders’ desire to educate students who can change the world for the better is being realized on a daily basis. One of the highlights of my year is attending graduation and seeing so many students who have worked so hard, who have grown as individuals, and who have so many plans for their lives and their world.
We hope this Web site will help you learn more about Friends University. We also hope you will visit our locations, including our main campus in Wichita. We are very fortunate to have facilities, technology and grounds that are among the best of any independent university in the state. But the most important aspect of our institution is certainly our people. It is their care and concern for students, alumni, donors and the community that is palpable when you step on campus. It is a fundamental part of our culture that goes back to the very beginning when Friends University was first founded in 1898. We hope you will visit us to experience for yourself how unique Friends University truly is.
