Master of Science in Environmental Studies

Mission: The Friends University Master of Science in Environmental Studies program provides high-quality instruction by environmental professionals, real-life experiences through internships and projects, and a broad-based approach to local, regional, national, and global environmental issues through studies in environmental history, economics and politics; environmental management; environmental health measures; energy and the environment; environmental biology; environmental geology, and environmental law.

OVERVIEW
The Master of Science in Environmental Studies (MSES) is a four-term, 80-week, 36 credit hour professional program. New cohorts form in August each year, with an average size of 15 students. The curriculum includes seven, four credit hour classroom courses, plus three to be arranged (TBA) courses totaling eight credit hours.

Each classroom course is offered in 11 four-clock hour (44 contact hours) evening or Saturday sessions over a period of 10 weeks. Courses begin with an Introduction to Environmental Studies, and then continue with graduate-level topics in Environmental Management, Environmental Health Measures, Energy and the Environment, Environmental Geology; Environmental Biology and Environmental Law. Included in these courses are lectures and discussions, guest expert presentations and discussions, and student presentations and discussions. Also a practical, hands-on focus includes field trips and/or laboratory investigations. There are few examinations, so most of a course grade is based on other measurements. These include research papers, environmental site analyses reports, book summaries, case studies and oral presentations. The small class size affords a great deal of individual attention by a faculty of environmental professionals.

To be arranged (TBA) courses included in the MSES program are a four-credit hour environmental internship designed to allow students to pursue supervised, hands on studies in environmental areas of interest to them. A three credit hour Environmental Project, which allows students to develop and demonstrate expertise in a specific area of the environment. The culminating activity is a one credit hour Environmental Studies Portfolio, demonstrating proficiency in the various expected outcomes of the program.

More than 60 students have graduated from the MSES program since its inception in 1989. A who's who list of environmental leaders in Kansas industry, government, education, and environmental organizations would include a good number of individuals who have the MSES degree from the Friends University.
