Marian Mitchell received a call before she enrolled at Friends University. It was a call from God, compelling her to teach.

“As we all know, when God calls, you either listen or pay the price,” said Mitchell, a 2006 graduate. She chose to answer the call.

When she came to the University, Mitchell already had a degree in computer programming. After dealing with the frustration of several other area colleges, Mitchell was pleased with what she encountered at Friends.

“Several area colleges were asking me to retake courses I’d already completed,” she said. “Friends did nothing like that. When I contacted Friends, they didn’t just respond via email or phone calls but were willing to sit down with me and help me get started quickly.”

Mitchell said she truly values the lessons she learned in classroom management at Friends University.

“Without classroom management at the forefront, education truly cannot be administered,” she said.

Currently, Mitchell teaches several business, math and technology courses at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita.

One of her more rewarding experiences she’s had as a teacher involved preparing a student for a top college scholarship.

“He called me and asked if I could help him in preparing for his many interviews that he would have to go through,” said Mitchell. “We spent several hours practicing and preparing for the big day. When he found out he won, he said that he knew he won because of all our interviewing practice. It is an amazing feeling to be part of something that big.”
