Requirements for Auditions in Dance, Drama, Music and Portfolio Reviews in the Visual Arts

Art & Communications

Students must provide a portfolio or samples of their work for studio, graphics, media and journalism. The portfolio may be in the form of a book, CD, DVD and/or website.


Female dancers will need both ballet slippers and pointe shoes for the audition class. All dancers are asked to have either a classical ballet variation or a prepared solo to present.

Dance Minor

Students auditioning for a dance minor will need to prepare a 2-minute dance solo in ballet, tap or jazz to present.


Students auditioning in this area should plan to present a memorized, 1- to 2-minute comic or dramatic monologue or a piece from a recent forensics competition. Students may also perform a “cold” reading as selected by the faculty members who are present.


Please bring one prepared solo for your voice type. You may bring your own accompanist or one will be provided for you. Also, please be sure to bring a copy of your music. All vocalists will audition in both vocal and choral areas.

During the choral audition, singers will be asked to vocalize to demonstrate vocal range and quality. In addition, you will also be asked to demonstrate tonal memory and sight reading skills.

Keyboard (Piano/Organ):
Please bring a memorized piece from the standard classical keyboard literature. Also plan to present a representative technical work, such as a scale (3 octaves), exercise, or etude.

Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion:
Please plan to perform a passage from a solo, etude, or KMEA audition music. If you do not have these, you may bring band music. If you play in jazz band, please bring KMEA audition music or a piece from your jazz folder.

Violin, Viola:
Your audition will consist of the following:

  • One three octave major and one three octave minor scale demonstrating slurs and spiccato.
  • An etude of your choice or a movement of an unaccompanied Bach selection.
  • A solo work (movement from a concerto, sonata or concert piece).


Please plan to play one scale and a solo of your choice.

Classical Double Bass:
Audition components include the following:

  • A 2-octave major scale and a 2-octave minor scale of your choice.
  • An etude or excerpt from orchestral literature on which you are currently working.
  • A solo of your choice (either accompanied or unaccompanied).

Jazz Bass: 
To audition in this area, please plan to do the following:

  • Walking Bb and F blues changes
  • Solo over Bb or F blues changes
  • One standard jazz piece of your choice from the following list:
    • All Blues, All the Things You Are, Days of Wine and Roses, Green Dolphin Street, How High the Moon, Just Friends, Satin Doll, So What, Take the A Train, There Will Never Be Another You

Please plan to play the head and walk changes (music will be provided by the bass teacher upon request).

Please plan to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • Reading music in open position
  • Open position chords
  • Barre chords
  • Jazz chords
  • Scales/modes

In addition, please present a prepared piece in any style or genre that demonstrates technical ability.
