The Friends University Concert Band would like to take audiences on a relaxing journey – specifically A Sunday Afternoon Drive in the Country – at a performance at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium. 

“The February concert is the only themed concert we do,” said John Taylor, professor of music and Concert Band conductor. “With Sunday Afternoon Drive in the Country in mind, music will be chosen along the theme of the outdoors and nature.” 

Internationally renowned trombone player, Harry Watters, will be the featured soloist.

The Friends University Fine Arts Division would like to invite audiences to the fifth annual Friends University Choral Connections at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Riney Fine Arts Building’s Sebits Auditorium. 

Choral Connections offers high school and college students an exceptional and intensive musical experience under the leadership of nationally renowned experts in choral singing. It allows visiting high school and college students as well as Friends University students to hear each other perform, and to learn and perform together.

Tara Hufford-Walker has not only made her name for herself as an artist, but she’s also educated many of Wichita’s young artists over the past few decades.

Friends University’s Ballet Department will host auditions for its spring ballet, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” from 5-6 p.m. Jan. 11 in the ballet studios in the Riney Fine Arts Center on the Friends University Campus. Auditions are for children 9-13 years old.

When you walk into Riney Fine Arts Gallery between Nov. 28 and Dec. 18, be prepared to be a bit uncomfortable while viewing artist Aaron Frondorf’s intaglio printmaking exhibit.

“I want to make those who are comfortable, uncomfortable; those who are uncomfortable, laugh; and those who are already laughing, comfortable through the validation of their shortcomings,” Frondorf said.

Friends University will present an exciting evening filled with rhythmic explosions at the Percussion Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

The percussion ensemble concert will feature works for a variety of instruments and from a variety of styles according to adjunct faculty member Ginger Zyskowski.

A Tower Wind Quintet Recital will usher in the holiday season with a musical performance at 7 p.m. Nov. 29 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

The quintet will tell the story of Hansel and Gretel with assistance from drama professor Dr. Charles Parker and story pictures projected on a screen. Additionally, holiday music will be performed, including selections from the “Nutcracker.”

A holiday tradition comes alive as Friends University presents its annual showcase of “The Nutcracker,” complete with Sugar Plum fairies, a mouse king and a handsome prince.

“The Nutcracker” will be performed at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10; 2 p.m. Dec. 11; 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16-17; and 2 p.m. Dec. 18 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.
