The Friends University Ballet Department and the Wichita Ballet Theatre will present six performances of the full-length holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10-11 and 2 p.m. Dec. 12. The second weekend performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17-18 and 2 p.m. Dec. 19.

The performances feature more than 85 local dancers and ballet majors at Friends University. The first weekend also features guest artists Melody Herrera and Connor Walsh, both principal dancers with the Houston Ballet.

The Friends University Singing Quakers will present their annual Christmas Candlelight Concert Dec. 2-5 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2-4 and 3 p.m. Dec. 5.

The concert will feature the Singing Quakers and Women’s Chorus under the direction of Dr. Mark Bartel and the Concert Choir directed by Rolaine Hetherington. The 200-voice Friends University Choral Union will also sing selections collectively.

The Friends University Jazz Department is proud to present Wayne Bergeron with the Friends University Jazz Ensembles at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center.

Bergeron is currently one of the most active jazz trumpet players in the world. He is a former lead trumpet player for Maynard Ferguson and is the current lead trumpet player for Gordon Goodwin’s Phat Band. He has recorded on more than 300 TV and movie soundtracks.

The Wichita Community Children’s Choir will present their winter concerts at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at First Baptist Church, 216 E. Second St., and at 4 p.m. Dec. 12 at First United Methodist Church, 330 N. Broadway St. All tickets are $5 at the door.

The Friends University Faculty Jazz Quintet will present a concert of jazz standards at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center. 

The quintet is comprised of Lisa Hittle, Jeff Gordon, Beau Jarvis, Dan Racer and Bill Glenn. Student combos directed by members of the quintet will also be featured.

Under the direction of Dr. Cecil J. Riney, the Singing Quakers Alumni Choir will perform “A Concert of Choral Classics” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church located at 1958 N. Webb Road in Wichita. Dr. Dan Forrest will be the featured guest composer; and Tracy Resseguie, a 1990 graduate, will be the featured guest conductor.

Tickets are $12 for adults, and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets may be reserved through the Friends University Fine Arts Office or purchased at the door.

The Friends University Community Orchestra, directed by Dr. Wes DeSpain, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center.

The orchestra is comprised of Friends University students as well as members of the community, and they will open their 52nd season with a concert titled, “Beethoven’s Heroic Voice.” The program will salute one of the titans of classical music, Ludwig von Beethoven, and feature two works by him: the Egmont Overture and Symphony No. 3 "Eroica."

The Friends University Concert Band will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center.

Charles Booker Jr. will be the featured composer/conductor-in-residence. Booker is an internationally-known composer of band music and will conduct three of his newer works with the Concert Band.

The Friends University Division of Fine Arts and Radio Kansas will present a performance by five Wichita-area musicians who frequently perform on the popular late-night “Nightcrossings” radio show. Instrumentalists Bruce Huss (guitar), Elaina Orwoll (harp), Jeff Pelischek (clarinet), Ryan Coon (guitar) and Trevor Stewart (chapman stick) will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center.
