The Friends University Faculty Jazz Quintet will present a concert of jazz standards at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center. 

The quintet is comprised of Lisa Hittle, Jeff Gordon, Beau Jarvis, Dan Racer and Bill Glenn. Student combos directed by members of the quintet will also be featured.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens. All students are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling 316-295-5677.

Under the direction of Dr. Cecil J. Riney, the Singing Quakers Alumni Choir will perform “A Concert of Choral Classics” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church located at 1958 N. Webb Road in Wichita. Dr. Dan Forrest will be the featured guest composer; and Tracy Resseguie, a 1990 graduate, will be the featured guest conductor.

Tickets are $12 for adults, and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets may be reserved through the Friends University Fine Arts Office or purchased at the door.

The Friends University Community Orchestra, directed by Dr. Wes DeSpain, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center.

The orchestra is comprised of Friends University students as well as members of the community, and they will open their 52nd season with a concert titled, “Beethoven’s Heroic Voice.” The program will salute one of the titans of classical music, Ludwig von Beethoven, and feature two works by him: the Egmont Overture and Symphony No. 3 "Eroica."

The Friends University Concert Band will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center.

Charles Booker Jr. will be the featured composer/conductor-in-residence. Booker is an internationally-known composer of band music and will conduct three of his newer works with the Concert Band.

The Friends University Division of Fine Arts and Radio Kansas will present a performance by five Wichita-area musicians who frequently perform on the popular late-night “Nightcrossings” radio show. Instrumentalists Bruce Huss (guitar), Elaina Orwoll (harp), Jeff Pelischek (clarinet), Ryan Coon (guitar) and Trevor Stewart (chapman stick) will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center.

The Friends University Jazz Vocal Ensemble, directed by Craig Curry, and the Friends University Jazz Ensemble II, directed by Lisa Hittle, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center. About 70 prospective high school students will take part in Friends University’s Fine Arts Showcase from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Students and parents are welcome to attend, and they are invited to stay after lunch if interested in certain department activities such as ballet class and individual meetings with Sharon Rogers, Jazz Band rehearsal and Percussion Ensemble rehearsal.

The Friends University Jazz Department will host Casado Jazz Night at 8 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Casado Campus Center.

Andrew Bishop, saxophone, and Ellen Rowe, piano, both from the University of Michigan will be the guest artists with the Friends University jazz combos in this relaxed coffee house setting.
The event is free.

Artistic alumni will return to Friends University to show off their creations in a gallery showcase of former students.

The Friends University Alumni Art Show will be displayed from Sept. 24 to Oct. 22 in the Riney Fine Arts Gallery in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will be a Final Friday reception at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 24 and a closing reception at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22. Both receptions are open to the public, and dessert will be served.
