Friends University, Radio Kansas to Present Nightcrossings Live! Oct. 22

The Friends University Division of Fine Arts and Radio Kansas will present a performance by five Wichita-area musicians who frequently perform on the popular late-night “Nightcrossings” radio show. Instrumentalists Bruce Huss (guitar), Elaina Orwoll (harp), Jeff Pelischek (clarinet), Ryan Coon (guitar) and Trevor Stewart (chapman stick) will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center.

Vocal Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble II to Perform

The Friends University Jazz Vocal Ensemble, directed by Craig Curry, and the Friends University Jazz Ensemble II, directed by Lisa Hittle, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Both ensembles will perform a wide variety of jazz standards and feature many outstanding soloists. 

Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students. They can be purchased at the door or by calling 316-295-5677.

Times Still Available for Fine Arts Showcase Oct. 29

About 70 prospective high school students will take part in Friends University’s Fine Arts Showcase from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Students and parents are welcome to attend, and they are invited to stay after lunch if interested in certain department activities such as ballet class and individual meetings with Sharon Rogers, Jazz Band rehearsal and Percussion Ensemble rehearsal.

Friends University to Host Free Jazz Night

The Friends University Jazz Department will host Casado Jazz Night at 8 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Casado Campus Center.

Andrew Bishop, saxophone, and Ellen Rowe, piano, both from the University of Michigan will be the guest artists with the Friends University jazz combos in this relaxed coffee house setting.
The event is free.

Fine Arts Gallery to Showcase Alumni Art

Artistic alumni will return to Friends University to show off their creations in a gallery showcase of former students.

The Friends University Alumni Art Show will be displayed from Sept. 24 to Oct. 22 in the Riney Fine Arts Gallery in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will be a Final Friday reception at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 24 and a closing reception at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22. Both receptions are open to the public, and dessert will be served.

Hetherington to Present Faculty Recital

Rolaine Hetherington, Friends University adjunct faculty, will present a free recital titled “Early American Music: Yankee Tunesmith and Their Music” at 3 p.m. Sept. 26 in Alumni Auditorium in the Davis Administration Building.

Hetherington, soprano, will be accompanied by Holly Ruth Gale, mezzo-soprano; John Hetherington, tenor; and Charley Sandage, bass.

"Jazz and Strings" Hits the Stage Sept. 30

The Friends University Jazz Department is proud to present “Jazz and Strings” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in Sebits Auditorium.

The concert will be dedicated to the late Gary Fletcher and will feature many of the jazz standards he arranged to feature jazz soloists with full string accompaniment. Featured soloists will include Steve Slater, Lisa Hittle and Jeff Gordon. The concert will also feature works written for Charlie Parker with strings and the Artie Shaw Concerto.

Friends University Jazz Performs Bon Voyage Concert for France Trip

In 1944, the All Kansas regiment, the 137th Infantry, delivered Orléans, France, from Nazi occupation, and for the next 30 years there was an unofficial relationship between Orléans and Wichita. In 1974, Orléans and Wichita became official sisters through Sister Cities International.

The Friends University Jazz Ensemble will be traveling to France June 15 and representing Wichita at the Orléans Jazz Festival.
