‘Arms and the Man’ Combines Laughter and Politics

The Friends University Theatre will present “Arms and the Man” by George Bernard Shaw Jan. 25-27.

This witty masterpiece, which takes place during the 1885 Serbo-Bulgarian War, combines high comedy with social commentary in deflating romantic misconceptions of love and warfare.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 and 26, and 2 p.m. Jan. 27 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

Ticket prices are $11 for adults, and $9 for seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased online at friends.edu/finearts or by calling the Fine Arts Box Office at 316-295-5677.

Fort Hays Artist to Display Paintings Balancing Life with Technology

Friends University will display artwork by Joel T. Dugan Jan. 14 to Feb. 8 in the Riney Fine Arts Gallery. Additionally, Dugan will participate in an artist demonstration at 10 a.m. Jan. 25 in the Garvey Art Center.

Dugan, an assistant professor or painting at Fort Hays State University, says the balance of life with technology has significance in his work.

Jazz Ensemble to Leave for Cuban Jazz Festival Dec. 17

Friends University’s Jazz Ensemble I will be traveling to Cuba to perform as a part of the Havana International Jazz Festival, Dec. 20-24, 2012. The Friends group was the only college jazz ensemble from the U.S. invited to perform this year.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our students, and they are honored to represent Friends University, Wichita, the state of Kansas and the United States,” said Lisa Hittle, director of the Jazz Ensemble I.

New York Dancers to Perform in ‘The Nutcracker’

A holiday tradition comes alive as Friends University presents its annual showcase of “The Nutcracker,” complete with Sugar Plum Fairy, a mouse king and a handsome prince.

Show times for opening weekend are 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7-8, and at 2 p.m. Dec. 9. The second weekend of performances are 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14-15 with the final show at 2 p.m. Dec. 16.

Annual Christmas Candlelight Concert This Weekend

Join the Friends University Singing Quakers, Concert Choir and Women’s Chorus as they celebrate the spirit of Christmas with the beloved tradition of the Christmas Candlelight Concert.

Saxophonist extraordinaire Jeff Clayton will be the featured guest artist with the Friends University Jazz Ensemble I, Jazz Ensemble II and Soulstice at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19. Clayton is from Los Angeles and has worked with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. The concert will take place in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

Singing Quakers to Perform with Wichita Symphony Orchestra

The Friends University Singing Quakers will join forces with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra to present Carl Orff’s epic Carmina Burana at 8 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 17.

The concert will be presented at the Century II Concert Hall in Wichita. Ticket prices range from $17 to $49 for this event and can be purchased through the Wichita Symphony Orchestra Box Office at 316-267-7658.

‘Star Spangled Bandanna II’ to Showcase American Authors

Friends University Theatre will present “The Star Spangled Bandanna II” in place of “The Fantasticks” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16-17 and 2 p.m. Nov. 18. All performances will be held in the Cornerstone Studio Theatre in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Admission is free, but seating is limited.

Works from Edgar Allan Poe, O. Henry, Charles Dickenson, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Dorothy Parker, James Thurber, Carrie Nation and more will be part of this theatre production.

Faculty Brass Quintet Concert to Honor Veterans

The Friends University Brass Quintet will pay a tribute to the men and women of the United States armed forces in a concert Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

The second half of the concert will feature patriotic music, as well as recognizing men and women in the audience who are active or retired military. The concert is free and open to the public.
