Friends University community takes Ice Bucket Challenge to fight ALS

Several Friends University groups and leaders have taken the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge this past week. Among them are Friends University Interim President Dr. Darcy Zabel, Friends University Board of Trustees Chair Dr. John Lewis and Friends University Board of Trustees Member Kim Dugger Attwater.

The University has had several employees who have lost family members to the disease, so participants are donating to the cause in addition to doing the challenge to increase awareness and support.

Six Falcons honored with 40 under 40 award

Friends University’s alumni and staff snagged six spots in the Wichita Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 class of 2014. 

Each year since 1998, the WBJ honors rising leaders in the Wichita area “who excel in their professions and contribute to the community,” according to the newspaper’s website.

Wichita Rotary Club passes gavel to Friends University professor

Dr. Arlen Honts, chair of the Division of Business and Information Technology, has been named the new president of the Rotary Club of Wichita. 

The Rotary Club of Wichita is 103-year-old organization of approximately 400 Wichita business and professional leaders that, according to the organization’s website, was established to “provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.”

Friends University announces graduation candidates

Approximately 800 Friends University students are eligible for graduation this May. About 600 students are expected to walk in the graduation ceremony in Wichita Saturday, May 10, at INTRUST Bank Arena. About 70 graduates were recognized in a Topeka graduation ceremony at the Topeka Performing Arts Center May 4.

Friends University President Resigns, Dr. Darcy Zabel Named Interim President

Friends University Board of Trustees Chair Dr. John Lewis today announced the appointment of Dr. Darcy Zabel as Interim President for the University, following the resignation of President T.J. Arant. 

Dr. Darcy ZabelLewis said Dr. Arant offered his resignation during a special meeting of the board earlier today. The board accepted his resignation, which will be effective March 21. Dr. Arant has been president since July 1, 2011 when he succeeded Dr. Biff Green.

Credit for experiential learning allows adult students to save money and graduate sooner

Most students who start or return to college as adults bring a wealth of experiences and knowledge with them, including professional training, volunteering or life experience. This knowledge and experience can translate into college credit so students may save money and graduate sooner. 

The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) program in Friends University’s College of Adult and Professional Studies works with bachelor-degree-seeking students to evaluate whether college credit can be earned for these experiences outside the classroom.
