The Friends University History and Political Science Club and Alumni Office will host Raschelle Scheppman as she speaks on “The Adventures and Rewards of Working Overseas” at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 in the William Penn Science Building, Room 100.

Scheppman was the first Iraq Support Unit Coordinator in Kuwait in 2003. She then served as Office Management Specialist (OMS) for the Iraq Regional Security Office in 2009. Scheppman currently works as the office manager for the Office of African Affairs in the U.S. Department of State.

Friends University’s Campus and Career Transitions (CCT) Office and the Alumni Office will host a Backpack to Briefcase seminar that will educate students and graduates on the ins and outs of networking from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Casado Campus Center’s Conference Room. Bert Jones and Crystal Hervey from Sunflower Bank will present “Networking Taking Action: The Art of Connecting with Employers” on networking etiquette and how to proceed once new contacts have been established.

Due to today’s technology, conversing face-to-face about stimulating topics has been replaced with text messaging and online profiles. Friends University is pleased to revive the most historical form of exchange by assembling people from diverse backgrounds and experiences at Great Conversation! from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at the Wichita Scottish Rite. To prepare for this conversation, organizers are asking for topic ideas for Wichita leaders to discuss and explore.

Seven Kansas candidates running for the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House (District 4) and for the governor’s race will discuss how their campaigns and platforms fit into our constitutional system as part of Friends University’s Constitution Day program Sept. 15. Friends University’s Garvey Institute of Law will present “The Constitution and the 2010 Election” from 7 to 8:45 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium in the Davis Administration Building.

One of Friends University’s brightest minds was recognized as one of the nation’s brightest minds when he was selected as a finalist for the Truman Scholarship last spring.

Aaron Gurley, a senior in political science and history, was named as one of 60 nationwide finalists for one of the highest honor scholarships in the United States. The Truman Scholarship winner receives $30,000 toward graduate studies.

The rigorous process included a series of essay questions, resumes, questionnaires and interviews.

The Cisco Networking Academy at Friends University will introduce the Security (CCNA Security) course this August that prepares participants for entry-level security career opportunities and the globally recognized Cisco CCNA Security certification. The CCNA Security class is a hands-on, career-oriented course with an emphasis on practical experience to help participants develop specialized security skills, along with critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills.
