Friends University to Travel to UK for Spring Break

Friends University is offering a course to experience overseas travel for students fulfilling their world-culture general education requirement. The trip has been offered for several years and is open to non-students, including parents and alumni. The 10-day venture to the United Kingdom will take place during spring break March 11-21, 2010. The deadline for joining the trip is Oct. 14, 2009.

Friends University Prepares for H1N1 Virus

Friends University is taking steps to educate students, faculty and staff about prevention of illness and to prepare for potential occurrences of the H1N1 virus.

“We care greatly about the health of our students, faculty and staff and are taking steps to prevent the spread of flu at the University,” said Dr. Biff Green, president of Friends University. “We are doing everything we can to keep everyone healthy.”

Fall Teacher Education Workshops Start Sept. 18 in Wichita and Lenexa

Meeting the needs of busy educators, Friends University will be offering a number of fall workshops to address the needs of PK-12 teachers across a number of content areas. Fall workshops will be available beginning Sept. 18, 2009, on the Wichita campus and Sept. 19, 2009, at the Lenexa Education Center. These workshops give teachers the opportunity to refresh, recertify or learn a new skill.

Friends University Partners with SKT to Launch Cisco Academy

Friends University and SKT Business Communication Solutions have partnered to launch a Cisco Networking Academy, offering a fast-track program for students preparing for information technology (IT) certifications. Friends University’s program is unique in that it is a stand-alone program unlike other universities in Kansas which offer certification in combination with a required bachelor’s degree.

Friends University Plans Smith Apartment Dedication Ceremony Sept. 23

Friends University’s newest student housing complex, J.R. and Gertrude Smith Apartments, will be dedicated in honor of the Smiths in a ceremony at 2 p.m. Sept. 23 in front of the apartments on the southeast corner of the campus.

J.R. and Gertrude Smith, both deceased, gifted more than $3 million to the University since 1991. Members of the Smiths’ family, University administrators, students and staff will attend the dedication.

Friends University Reports 2nd-Best Fundraising Year, Reaffirms Decision to Fund Scholarships at Existing Levels

Friends University received $7.7 million in gift income for 2008-09, making it the second-largest fundraising year in the University’s history. In addition, despite decreases in many university endowments, Friends University is reaffirming its commitment to maintain existing scholarship levels for students in 2009-10.

“We are very grateful for the support that our alumni and donors have provided for the University – especially given the economic situation during the past year,” said Dr. Biff Green, Friends University president.

Dr. Eick, Flook Receive Commencement Awards

Each year, students at Friends University nominate full-time faculty members for the W.A. Young Award for Excellence in Teaching and adjunct faculty members for the Jan LaFever Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award.

Dr. Gretchen Eick was presented with the W.A. Young award, and Kay Flook received the Jan LaFever award at the 2009 commencement ceremony.

The W.A. Young award began in 1963 in honor of Dr. Walter A. Young, who served as a faculty member, academic dean and then president of Friends University from 1939 to 1946.

Friends University to Host First-Ever National Football Playoff Game on Campus

Friends University will be hosting its first-ever national football playoff game this Saturday, Nov. 17.



Falcon Football won last Saturday’s game against the University of St. Mary 35-6, earning the 2007 KCAC Championship and the team’s way into the first-round of the NAIA Championship. The Falcons finished the season with a conference record of 8-1 and an overall record of 9-1. Athletic Director Joe Zimmerman received word Sunday, Nov. 16, that the University’s bid to host the NAIA first-round game had been accepted.

Lecture Explores Eastern Orthodox Worship
