More than 250 Friends University staff, faculty and students helped the Salvation Army prepare for its holiday distribution to needy families Monday, Dec. 16. The University shut down campus for the 21st year in a row to spend the day sorting toys and gifts, decorating the center, wrapping gifts, organizing undesignated toys and helping with the Angel Tree and Star of Hope programs. The Wichita Eagle, KAKE TV and KSN TV covered this year's event.

Psych Club keeps Wichita warm with coat donations

More than 100 Wichitans will stay a bit warmer this winter, thanks to the generosity of the Friends University Psychology Club. 

For the eighth year, the Psychology Club has collected new and gently-used winter coats to donate to organizations that help needy Wichitans. 

“This year’s coats went to Operation Holiday,” said Megan Duggins, a member of the Psychology Club. “But in other years we have sent them to His Helping Hands and the Salvation Army.”

Friends University to send 250 helpers to Salvation Army for holiday preparations

The Friends University community will embark on its 21st year in its mission of making Christmas a bit merrier for hundreds of needy families in Wichita. 

On Dec. 16, more than 250 staff, faculty, students, alumni and families affiliated with the University will embrace the spirit of the season for the annual Salvation Army Service Day. The University will effectively shut down for the day, allowing participants to concentrate on the task of helping to prepare and disperse donated gifts.

Wichita celebrates 40-year partnership with Mexican Sister City

Dignitaries from Wichita were recently welcomed to the city of Tlalnepantla, Mexico, to celebrate 40 years of city sisterhood. 

Dr. Jerry Smartt, Friends University Professor of Spanish, accompanied Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and City Councilman Jeff Blubaugh, ‘98/99/02, on a trip to Tlalnepantla, just north of Mexico City in central Mexico, from Sept. 12 to Sept. 17. The trip marked 40 years since Wichita and Tlalnepantla formed an alliance through the Sister City program.

'Ragamuffin' celebrates life of Christian artist, Friends grad

One of Friends University’s most famous and talented graduates is the focus of the film, "Ragamuffin," which will make its debut at Wichita’s Orpheum Theater on Jan. 9, 2014. 

Rich Mullins, ’95, was one of Christian music’s brightest stars as a singer and songwriter. Some of his most legendary hits include "Awesome God" and "Sometimes by Step."

On Sept. 29, Dr. Russell Fox, professor of political science, discussed Kansas senator Jean Schodorf and her run for secretary of state. Dr. Malcolm Harris, professor of finance, was on the show Oct. 6 to discuss the first government shutdown in 17 years.
