Friends University will be hosting its first-ever national football playoff game this Saturday, Nov. 17.

Falcon Football won last Saturday’s game against the University of St. Mary 35-6, earning the 2007 KCAC Championship and the team’s way into the first-round of the NAIA Championship. The Falcons finished the season with a conference record of 8-1 and an overall record of 9-1. Athletic Director Joe Zimmerman received word Sunday, Nov. 16, that the University’s bid to host the NAIA first-round game had been accepted.

The No. 8-ranked Falcons will play the No. 9-ranked Missouri Valley Vikings of Marshall, Mo., at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in Adair-Austin Stadium. The Vikings currently hold an overall record of 8-2, finishing third in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

Zimmerman expresses appreciation to the numerous departments across campus helping to prepare for Saturday’s event.

“With only five days’ preparation, this becomes a University-wide effort,” Zimmerman said. “It’s exciting to see everyone working together for a successful event.”

While Zimmerman is very excited about this historic opportunity to host the NAIA, he cautions that this weekend’s game will not be “business as usual.” He notes that the NAIA has strict guidelines the University must follow regarding the playoff game. Examples of these rules include not allowing any free passes to the game, NAIA approval of national playoff merchandise for sale, restrictions on half-time activities and access to the field and sidelines, security requirements, and others.

“While we may not be able to follow all of our typical Friends University game practices, this is a very special moment in Falcon athletics,” Zimmerman said. “ We hope you can gather your family or call your former classmates and make arrangements to see Falcon history in the making.”

Advance tickets can be purchased Thursday and Friday. Advance tickets will be $5 each for adults, $4 each for students (including college, high school, middle or elementary school and pre-Kindergarten) and $3 per person for youth groups of 15 or more. Please contact the Athletic Office at 316-295-5700 for advance tickets. Please note that Friends University student, staff, faculty and alumni passes will NOT be allowed at this game due to NAIA restrictions.

On game day, tickets must be purchased at the gate for $10 per person for anyone 3 and older.

In addition to the football playoff game, Friends University is also hosting a Basketball Classic Saturday in Garvey Physical Education Center with teams from several universities.
