Leadership is not about holding the highest position in an organization or having a specific title. It is not about seeing how many things you can be involved in. Leadership at Friends University is about being committed to a cause, being known for your accountability and being respected by others for your dedication.
Leaders are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty. They get things done and motivate others to reach their fullest potential. “Leadership is essential for effective management and a good leader is able to understand his subordinates, their needs and source of satisfaction.”*
There are many opportunities at Friends University to develop and improve your leadership skills:

Falcon Leadership Scholarship Program
The Falcon Leadership Scholarship Program is made up of a group of scholarship recipients who are driven to use their leadership abilities within the community of Friends University while also planning for the future. Scholarships are awarded each year based on applications submitted, a GPA requirement, letters of reference and an essay on the importance of leadership. Current scholars' participation is assessed at the completion of each year and those scholars who have displayed a high level of performance/attendance are readmitted into the program for the following year. Ideally, then, the program retains its scholars throughout their four-year career at Friends.
Since this program strives to retain strong scholars, year three of the four-year module allows the upperclassmen to work on a team project and then spend their final year on an individual internship project. Both years are supervised by a Coordinator of Student Development, specifically assigned to oversee the third- and fourth-year scholars.
Six students will be admitted into the 2011-2012 Falcon Leadership program along with five second-year, three third-year and three fourth-year students who were readmitted. During the fall semester, these students meet to participate in community service, hear from guest speakers and discuss select reading material. They also participate in team building activities and enjoy an end-of-semester wrap-up dinner/meeting. The spring semester focuses on servant-leadership and allows the scholars more hands-on experience in giving back to the community. The third-year scholars work on their team project and the fourth-year scholars execute their individual projects.
The Office of Community and Residential Development oversees the Falcon Leadership Program. Please call 316-295-5500 or e-mail reslife@friends.edu with any questions.

First-Year Interns (FYIs) are students who assist their peer students in transitioning to Friends University. They are student leaders who represent diverse backgrounds and fields of study and will fulfill the responsibilities of assisting with the Summer Enrollment Days, Fall Orientation, First-Year Experience and Spring Orientation. For each of these programs, the FYIs are each responsible for leading a small group and helping them learn about the Friends University culture, gain life skills to be successful during college and after, assist in the education and understanding of the academic demands, and explore new ideas and concepts.
