Friends University is partnering with Young Entrepreneurs of Kansas (YEK) to encourage high-school students to pursue their dreams through higher education.

Students who are involved with YEK have had the opportunity to apply for a $5,000 scholarship at Friends University. High-school students who are interested in applying for the scholarship in the future can get more information at www.yeks.org.

YEK works with several colleges and universities throughout the area, but this is the first year Friends has participated in the scholarship program, said Andrea Gegen, executive director of corporate and community relations at Friends University.

“This really came out of our continued fostering of our relationship between Friends University and the YEK program,” Gegen said.

Gegen said the partnership between the University and YEK is natural, in that the two organizations share common goals.

“One of YEK’s goals is to encourage students to pursue higher education,” she said. “Through partnering with YEK in this way, we feel that we foster this goal and aid in encouraging a young person to attend college, that might not have otherwise, considering that most YEK students are the first in their immediate family to attend college. Many of these students just need someone to show them the way. This is the type of caring that students at Friends University receive, so it makes complete sense for us to partner with an organization like YEK.”

Friends University student Emily Ledwich was a former recipient and participant in YEK.

“I greatly enjoyed YEK in high school because of the learning experiences it allowed me to have,” Ledwich said. “Through YEK, I was exposed to business terminology and opportunities that I otherwise would not have received.  The scholarship will be extremely beneficial in helping to bring students looking to pursue business to our school.”

Not only is the University participating in YEK’s scholarship program, it also helped YEK students with professional development through a Dare to Dream workshop Jan. 25-27 at the Wichita Hyatt. During this event, students were shown their educational options for continued success after high school.
