The Friends University Singing Quakers and Concert Choir will share the stage with some of Kansas’ top high-school choirs at 7:30 p.m. March 30 in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center as they present their fourth annual “Choral Connections.”
Joining the Friends University Singing Quakers, Concert Choir and Jazz Vocal Ensemble will be choirs from Wichita West High School, Wichita Heights High School, Trinity Academy and Northfield School of the Liberal Arts.
“Choral Connections” offers high-school students an exceptional and intensive musical experience under the leadership of nationally-renowned experts in choral singing. It includes rehearsals, clinics and masterclasses led by Friends University faculty Dr. Mark Bartel and Dr. David Weber. Guest conductor-clinician and Friends University alumnus Dr. Andre Thomas of Florida State University will conduct clinics with the Wichita Community Children’s Choir at 4:45 p.m. March 29 and with visiting high school choirs at 2 p.m. March 30.
“‘Choral Connections’ is about building bridges: between singers and conductors, between choirs and schools, but most of all from one human being to another,” said Dr. Mark Bartel, director of choral music at Friends University. “Music is one of the deepest bonds that we share, and students attending ‘Choral Connections’ will not only experience great music and a fantastic conductor, but the joy and satisfaction of working together toward a common goal.
“Perhaps one of our most significant ‘connections’ this year is that our guest conductor, Dr. Andre Thomas, is an alumnus of Friends University and the Singing Quakers, and a native Wichitan,” Dr. Bartel said. “Dr. Thomas of Florida State University is one of the most sought-after clinicians in the nation, and we are fortunate to have him as our special guest.”
Ticket prices for the March 30 concert are $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens.
