Author Neil White Chosen as Garvey Lecture Speaker
Friends University Garvey Lecture Series will feature author Neil White in its upcoming lecture titled “Shedding the Facade of Perfection: Breaking Free of Prisons We Build for Ourselves.” The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, in Alumni Auditorium in the Davis Administration Building on the Friends University Wichita campus. A reception and book signing with the author will follow the lecture.
White is the author of “In the Sanctuary of Outcasts,” a highly acclaimed, nonfiction book that captures his 18 months as a prisoner serving time for bank fraud at a U.S. prison in Carville, La., that also served as home to the nation’s last leprosy patients. He chronicles his journey as a man who spent his adult life building an image, yet ironically was sent to a place where outward image meant nothing. White will speak about these transformative experiences that allowed him to finally shed his own facade and discover personal freedoms and states “the audience will get a voyeuristic glimpse into a flawed life – as well as the lives of ‘the secret people,’ the last Americans imprisoned for leprosy.” White added, “No real healing can take place in our own lives until we face our own imperfections.”
White was formerly a newspaper editor and magazine publisher in the New Orleans area. He now lives in Oxford, Miss., where he owns a small publishing company. Selected among hundreds of nominees, his book was recently selected as the third place nonfiction award winner for Barnes & Noble Booksellers’ Discover Great New Writers awards, a program that recognizes new, dynamic and upcoming literary writers.
The public is invited to attend the lecture, which is free of charge. Tickets are required for admission. Advanced tickets may be reserved beginning March 15 by clicking here.
