University to Test Emergency Notification System
Friends University plans to test a new broadcast alerting service in late February. The new system sends timely information about weather closings or an emergency to students, faculty, staff and other members of the campus community.
The University is using Rave Alert supplied by Rave Wireless to disseminate timely notifications to users via multiple communications channels including mobile text alerts and email. The alert system will be able to notify students at University sites in Wichita, Topeka and Lenexa sites independently.
“The Rave Alert system gives us a great tool to send emergency communications to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, regardless of where everyone is at the time,” said Heidi Hoskinson, university registrar “This system delivers weather closing and emergency information directly to the student or employee rather than them having to look for this information on the Friends website, local television or radio stations or calling the University directly.”
All students, staff and faculty who have provided cell phone numbers to the University will automatically receive the alerts unless they choose to opt out, Hoskinson said. Students who choose to opt out will not receive these notifications.
“Current students who opt out may find they are the only ones who show up for class or work on a snow day,” Hoskinson said. “That’s why we think it’s in everyone’s best interest to receive the notices.
The University plans to do the first test message Feb. 25. Students, staff and faculty who do not receive a test message after the initial test should visit www.friends.edu/falcon-alert and update their cell phone number. In addition, parents of students and other people connected to Friends can also receive alerts by signing up at www.friends.edu/falcon-alert.
