The Friends University Community Orchestra will welcome the winners of the Miller Concerto/Aria Competition and the Wichita Area Piano Teachers League Competition as guest soloists for their concert at 7:30 p.m. April 15 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.
The program will also include Tchaikovsky’s Waltz from his opera “Eugene Onegin,” and “Sheherazade” by Nicolae Rimsky-Korsakov, featuring concertmaster Valerie Sullivan.
The concert will feature two soloists: Concertmaster Valerie Sullivan during “Scheherazade” by Rimsky-Korsakov; and Amy Sheldon, winner of the 2010 Wichita Piano Teachers League’s high school division competition, performing the second movement of “Piano Concerto No. 2” by Rachmaninoff. The orchestra will also perform a waltz from Tchaikovsky’s opera titled “Eugene Onegin.”
“The concert features works from three great Russian composers that were written within the span of roughly 20 year,” said Wes DeSpain, adjunct professor at Friends University. “All of the works feature beautiful melodies, colorful orchestration, and demand virtuosity from the orchestra.”
Tickets for this performance cost $10 for adults, and $8 for students and senior citizens. For more ticket information this event or any Fine Arts events or performances, contact the Fine Arts ticket line at 316-295-5677.
