Garvey Lecture Series Presents New York Times Best-selling Author, Bullying Expert April 1-2
Bullying is not a joke. It’s not a rite of passage. It’s not just something to grin, bear and endure. Jodee Blanco can tell you that. As the author of The New York Times best seller "Please Stop Laughing at Me" and award-winning sequel "Please Stop Laughing at Us," Blanco will tell audiences that during a free parent-community seminar “It’s NOT Just Joking Around!, A Survivor’s Guide to Bullying and Peer Abuse” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 1, in Alumni Auditorium in the Davis Administration Building. A reception and book-signing will follow.
Blanco’s acclaimed anti-bullying program, which has been presented to more than 500,000 students, teachers and parents nationwide, comes from personal heart-breaking experiences – as a victim of bullies throughout her education. Blanco will share some of her personal experiences. Additionally, she will share what parents and educators should never say to a bullied child; what should be said; and an innovative solution to bullying called compassionate discipline.
Blanco’s message will be threefold: Bullying is not just joking around, it damages you for life; bullying isn’t just the mean things you do, it’s all the nice things you never do; and if you’re being bullied or shunned, there’s nothing wrong with you, it’s everything that’s right about you that makes you a target, and you shouldn’t change for anyone, it is those who put you down who need to change.
In addition to the parent-community seminar, Blanco will present a teacher-counselor workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 2, in Alumni Auditorium in the Davis Administration Building. Both the seminar and workshop are free and open to the community, but reservations are required. RSVP on and after March 1.
