Wichita Native Comes Home to Display Her Paintings
Karyl Barbosa is no stranger to Wichita or Friends University. The artist was born in Wichita and attended Ingalls Elementary and Allison Junior High before graduating from Wichita West High School. She received a degree from Friends University in 1969 and earned a graduate degree from Wichita State University.
Barbosa’s Wichita and Midwestern upbringing and background are strongly exemplified in her works, which include a variety of still life, floral, animal and landscape paintings. Her works will be on display at the Friends University Riney Fine Arts Gallery from March 18 to April 21.
“Although traditional in content, particularly unique is how Barbosa approaches the use of light in some of her current painting. This allows the colors offered to the viewer to have an exciting energy and depth,” said Adam Achey, adjunct professor of art at Friends University.
Barbosa, who currently resides in Wichita Falls, Texas, paints primarily with a limited palette. She mixes most of her colors using three primary colors, plus white. She employs several methods in approaching her work and paints in a realistic fashion.
“In my work I attempt to capture colors, textures and beautiful moments that can be recorded with the use of paints and brushes,” Barbosa said. “The artist is the one with a watchful eye that records and captures time. As a realistic artist, I paint simplistic pictures.”
A Final Friday reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, in the gallery. For more information on this exhibit or any Fine Arts event, contact the Fine Arts Ticket Office at 316-295-5677.
