Audiences will savor a taste of Italy’s rich musical history as the Friends University Community Orchestra performs at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.
The “Taste of Italy” concert will feature pieces from Rossini’s overture to “The Barber of Seville” and Tchaikovsky’s “Capriccio Italien.”
“The theme ‘Taste of Italy’ was chosen because both of the orchestra pieces on the first half of the program have their roots in the Italian musical traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries,” said Wesley DeSpain, adjunct professor of music at Friends University.
Performances by the Friends University Solo Competition and the Wichita Area Piano Teacher’s League Concerto Competition winners will be featured during the second half of the concert. Friends University freshman Mary Detrick, winner of the Miller Concerto Competition, will perform the finale of Prokofieff's “Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor.” High school junior Casey Lindsted, winner of the Wichita Piano Teacher's League's concerto competition, will perform the finale of Gershwin's “Concerto in F,” DeSpain said.
“The music on this concert is diverse, difficult, enjoyable and exciting,” said DeSpain. “The two soloists are outstanding performers.”
Tickets to the performance cost $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. A reception will follow the performance.
