Summer-time renovations are bringing a new café to the Casado Campus Center and new gym floor graphics to the Garvey Physical Education Center.

Casado Campus Center
Friends University’s Casado Campus Center is receiving a face-lift this summer with renovations in the lower level.

The $350,000 project replaces Freddie’s Snack Bar with Jazzman’s Café and Bakery, and Sandella’s Flatbread Sandwiches.

“After renovations, Casado’s lower level will consist of a 5-foot tile walkway around the outside of the atrium with carpet-tile in the middle,” said Allen Eberwein, director of the Casado Campus Center. “Casado will also look different with updated tables, chairs, ceiling, lights, and general decor.”

Renovations started June 18 with demolition and will conclude with kitchen and cooking equipment installed by Aug. 1.

“Since the renovations are taking place during the summer with fewer students using Casado, there is only a minor inconvenience on the summer staff,” Eberwein said.

Jeremy Schrag, Student Government Association executive president, said students will appreciate the renovations.

“The focus groups concluded that students wanted more of a coffee shop and friendly atmosphere to unwind,” Schrag said. “It’s really meeting the wants and needs that the students expressed.”

Garvey Physical Education Center
Additionally, the Garvey PE Center gym floor will undergo an extensive overhaul.

With several changes in collegiate basketball in the past few years, the Athletics Department has partnered with Creative Floors Coating and Design to adapt the court to the new three-point lines shared by both men’s and women’s basketball, to add the “charging arc” used by referees to determine a charge or block under the basket, and to enhance of the court lines for collegiate volleyball.

In addition the court will have a new graphic display along with a two-color stain that will give the hardwood a unique appearance to be pleasing for both athlete and spectator.

“We evaluated several renditions of design,” said Joe Zimmerman, director of athletics. “Seeking input from our volleyball and basketball coaches, we are excited that the new look will be very appealing and will enhance our facilities.”
