Great Minds to Discuss Sustainability and Other Topics during 'Great Conversation!' Event

The art of conversation is not lost at Friends University. In fact, the University is inviting the community to its third annual Great Conversation! event 5 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Wichita Scottish Rite, 332 E. First St. in Wichita.

Great Conversation! brings people from the community together for dinner and discussion on a broad range of compelling topics. 

This year’s plenary session “Resource Revolution: Fossil Fuels and the Future of Food and Energy,” features Jeffery Ball, scholar-in-residence at the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance at Stanford University, and Wes Jackson, founder of The Land Institute. 

Jeffery Ball’s research has focused on the intensifying race among companies and countries to corner the clean-energy market and the implications of that race for consumers and the planet – in particular the economic viability of changing the way the world consumes fossil fuels. 

Wes Jackson’s Land Institute was founded in 1976 and focuses on sustainable agriculture. His efforts are beginning to demonstrate progress in developing the perennial crops called for in the Natural Systems Agricultural model. He is widely recognized as a leader in the sustainable agriculture international movement. 

The plenary session will be followed by dinner and discussion on topics such as:

  • Will aviation in Wichita continue to fly?
  • Voyeur Nation: America’s love affair with reality TV
  • Top 10 spiritual books of the last century
  • Incarcerated America: A new Jim Crow?

Participants can choose from dozens of topics and will be seated at a table on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each table seats up to 10 people, including the moderator.
