Friends University’s Soulstice took home top honors from the University of Kansas Jazz Festival March 1-2 in Lawrence, Kan.
Soulstice was named Best College Jazz Group at the festival, earning them a $1,500 award, a trophy and the privilege of opening for guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel at the March 2 headliner concert.
The group’s performances at the concert included “Jive Samba,” “Paper Moon,” “What Is This Thing Called Love?” and “Overdrive.” Soulstice is comprised of five members: Andre Reyes, a sophomore in music performance; Jerome Porter, a sophomore in health science; Zach Rich, a freshman in music performance; and Jon and David Consiglio, both juniors in music.
“I was thrilled for the guys to win the KU Jazz Festival, because they have all worked very hard to play at a very high level,” said Lisa Hittle, assistant professor of music at Friends University. “It is amazing that we can compete with groups in Oklahoma and across Kansas and come home with this honor. It is further proof that Friends University has one of the leading jazz programs in the region.”
