Jazz Vocal Ensemble to Present Wichita Premiere of ‘Jazz Mass’

The Friends University Jazz Vocal Ensemble is concluding a stellar year with another first: the Wichita premiere of “Jazz Mass” by composer Craig Curry, a five-movement work for jazz vocals, accompanied by a jazz combo and horn section. Curry, the director of the ensemble, was commissioned in 2011 to compose “Jazz Mass” by Wartburg College Castle Singers in Waverly, Iowa. The group premiered the work in 2012 and performed it throughout its European tour last summer. Each movement of “Jazz Mass” is set in a different jazz style (be-bop, samba, cha-cha-cha, ballad, and the blues), and the text utilizes both Latin and English.

This will be the first complete performance of the work in Wichita. The ensemble recently performed two movements as part of their program at the Jazz Education Network conference in January in Atlanta. One of six vocal jazz ensembles selected to perform at the conference, the ensemble’s performance marked the first time a Friends University jazz group was selected to perform at a national jazz conference.

The remainder of the evening’s program will draw from a variety of songs and styles, from classic jazz standards such as “The Way You Look Tonight” to an adaptation of the romping big-band classic, “Sing, Sing, Sing,” all performed with the group’s tight harmonies and signature vocal blend.

The acclaimed ensemble will offer an evening full of great jazz at 7:30 p.m. April 5 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

Ticket prices are $9 for adults, and $6 for seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the Fine Arts Box Office at 316-295-5677.
