Romance, misdirection and confusion will take the stage as the Opera Workshop class performs a one-act opera at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. Nov. 24 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.
“L’Occasione Fa Il Ladro” (The Opportunity Makes the Thief) is a one-act opera by Gioacchino Rossini. The first performance of this Italian opera was in Venice 1812. The Friends University Chamber Orchestra will provide the orchestra music for this performance.
Count Alberto, travelling to be wed to a fiancée he has yet to meet, leaves an inn with the wrong suitcase. Don Parmenione audaciously adopts the Count’s identity, determined to take the bride for himself. This single-act performance is a moral drama, and Rossini’s exuberant inspiration poured into interactions both tender and hilariously bewildering.
Tickets are $16 for adults, and $13 for seniors and students. They may be purchased online or by calling the Fine Arts Box Office at 316-295-5677.
