Young musicians to converge on campus for Jazz Festival

Area high school, middle school, and junior college jazz bands will come to Friends University to celebrate the 21st annual Jazz Festival and perfect their skills with the musical masters at Friends University. 

The festival runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 21 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 22 in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Students get to work with the Friends University Jazz faculty, as well as the guest artists to learn and improve their musical skills. 

A Jazz Vocal Invitational Concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 will feature the Hutch Community College Jazz Ensemble, Ottawa University Jazz Singers, Friends University Jazz Vocal Ensemble and guest vocalist Connaitre Miller. This concert will be in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium. 

The festival will culminate with a headline performance with Bobby Watson and Horizon at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium. For more information about the jazz band, visit horizonjazz.com

Daytime events on Feb. 21-22 are free and open to the public. 

Ticket prices for the invitational concert are $9 for adults, and $6 for seniors and students. Prices for the headliner concert are $25 for adults, and $20 for seniors and students. All tickets can be purchased online or by calling the Fine Arts Box Office at 316-295-5677.
