Lauren Fitzgerald’s art quite literally has many layers – not just in the interpretation of her creations, but in the pieces themselves.
“My medium of choice is cut paper. I use several layers of paper, cut by hand with an X-acto knife, to create the image,” Fitzgerald says in her artist statement. “Just as a painter builds up layers of paint, I build up layer upon layer of paper. I usually paint on or otherwise alter the surface of the paper before I start carving out the layers.”
Fitzgerald, a 2007 Friends University graduate, is exhibiting some of her cut paper artwork from Feb. 16 to March 9 at Friends University. A Final Friday reception will be held Feb. 28 from 5-7 p.m. in the Riney Fine Arts Gallery.
Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
