Friends University will host two commencement ceremonies to celebrate graduates this May. Nearly 800 students are candidates for graduation, and many of them are expected to attend one of the following ceremonies:
Topeka Ceremony: May 4 – 2 p.m. Topeka Performing Arts Center, 214 SE 8th Ave.
Cpt. J. Darin Scott of the Topeka Police Department will speak during the ceremony. Scott earned a Master of Science in Organizational Management and Leadership from Friends University in 2009.
During his 26 years with the Topeka Police Department, Scott has been a patrol, traffic and motorcycle officer, public information officer, crime prevention sergeant, school resource officer supervisor, assistant division commander, and operations commander. Additionally, he has served as an instructor for the Topeka Police Department Academy, a guest instructor for the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, an adjunct instructor for Washburn University, and a guest lecturer at Friends University.
Currently Cpt. Scott is an executive on loan from the Topeka Police Department, serving as the assistant to the city manager for neighborhood relations, working with city code, housing and development, and animal control.
Graduate check-in begins at 1 p.m., and doors will open at that same time for family and guests. Graduates and their guests are invited to enjoy refreshments at a graduate reception immediately following the commencement ceremony.
Wichita Ceremony: May 10 – 2 p.m. INTRUST Bank Arena, 500 E. Waterman
Graduates and their guests are invited to enjoy a pre-ceremony campus celebration with a light continental breakfast of pastries, juice and coffee from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Friends University Casado Campus Center on the Wichita campus. Faculty, staff and classmates are also invited. RSVPs to the pre-ceremony celebration are due by May 5 and can be made by clicking here.
Trolleys will run every 15 minutes to transport guests and graduates from the Casado Campus Center to the INTRUST Bank Arena for the commencement ceremony. INTRUST Bank Arena doors will open at noon for guests, and graduates will begin check-in procedures. INTRUST Bank Arena requires that all patrons are subject to search. For more details, click here.
For those who are unable to attend the Wichita commencement ceremony but would still like to watch a loved one receive his or her diploma, the University will be streaming the event live at friends.edu/commencement-live.
In addition, friends and family can Tweet messages of congratulations to graduates, which will be shown on the large screen at the Wichita event. Live tweeting will occur 30 minutes before the ceremony and while graduates are crossing the stage. To participate, sign into Twitter and use this hashtag: #FriendsUGrads.
