Planned Giving

Planned gifts are expressions of people who desire to ensure a vibrant future for young people. These gifts enable our friends and alumni to encourage students to hold fast to our valued traditions of spiritual engagement, cultural enrichment and social responsibility as they reach toward the horizon. A gift to Friends provides new commitment, new resources and new opportunities for learning that last a lifetime.

Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA)
Roy didn’t attend Friends University classes when he was a young man back in the ‘30s, despite the fact that he only lived a few blocks from campus. But on those evenings when the heat wouldn’t subside you would often find him strolling over to campus to enjoy the coolness offered by the breezes and shade of the large trees. Some years later he found himself returning to the old neighborhood to rebuild some of the Delano-area homes. He could see their potential and put his resources to work.

Charitable Gift Annuity - RoyThat’s why Roy likes charitable gift annuities. He learned that his money could be put to good use by the University to help students with tuition and program expenses, but he could also receive a fixed payment for life (the rate is based on his age). He no longer had to worry about the fluctuating stock market or low CD rates, rather he could rest assured knowing the exact amount he would receive each year, and at a level higher than any of his investments!

Roy will soon be 98 years of age and just recently established a current gift to underwrite the maintenance expenses associated with fine arts equipment (particularly the piano). Though not the most glamorous way to support the University, this is still an essential piece of what we do – provide outstanding Fine Arts performances. This is his way to honor the memory of his wife who often played piano. When Roy passes, a remainder amount from his estate will be applied to that fund so he can continue to support students and professionals as they perform in the years to come. Roy can continue to improve things, honor his wife and support Friends University in a special way!

Life Insurance
Life insurance - VincentsDon, G’48, and Vela Vincent have an asset they decided they wouldn’t need in their twilight years – a life insurance policy. Their desire is to support financially-strapped foreign students attending Friends University, just as Don and his father Charles, G’18, did. So the Vincents transferred their policy to the University, received a tax deduction and experienced the satisfaction of knowing this gift will make a wonderful difference in the future of many students.

As you can see from these two examples, gifts to the University vary along with their designations. A gift at any point in life, and even at death, as is the case with gifts made through your will or trust, are critical to our students. Naming Friends University as a beneficiary in your estate plan is a simple and lasting way to acknowledge the University’s role in your life.
