Friends University presents International Jazz Day Celebration, April 30

Wichita, Kan. – Friends University Jazz Department will present a live showcase concert, International Jazz Day Celebration, Friday, April 30, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. in Sebits Auditorium.

This concert will highlight each of the Friends University jazz groups:

  • Zellers Combo
  • Abdallah Combo
  • SOULstice
  • Friends University Faculty Jazz Quartet
  • Conjunto Latino de Friends University
  • The Swingin’ Quakers Jazz Ensemble

International Jazz Day originated in 2011 instigated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). “International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics and jazz enthusiasts on all continents to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact,” cited the Jazz Day’s official website.

The movement is celebrated for its efforts in promoting peace, facilitating dialog around tough subjects, fighting for human rights and pushing for equality.

“We are honored to participate in International Jazz Day with a celebration concert featuring all of the jazz ensembles at Friends University. Join us and enjoy a live jazz performance as people all over the world celebrate jazz,” said Dr. Robert Brooks, Friends University’s Director of Jazz.

The performance will take place in Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium on the Friends University campus at 2100 W. University Ave., Wichita, Kan. The performance is free to attend but tickets are required at Friends.edu/FineArtsTickets.
