University to celebrate homecoming Oct. 18-19
Friends University will be celebrating Homecoming Oct. 18-19. Homecoming festivities will include an expanded parade that will include community groups and several area marching bands, a tailgate party, the Saturday afternoon football game and alumni reunions.
The weekend will kick off with a Chamber Concert performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium as well as an alumni dinner Friday evening.
Saturday afternoon festivities will start with a Homecoming parade at 1 p.m. This year’s parade will feature a variety of groups from the surrounding community, said Lisa Tilma, executive director of alumni relations at Friends University. The parade route itself has been extended – starting at the corner of Maple and Hiram streets, traveling down Hiram to Mentor Street to Elizabeth Street to University Avenue to Hiram, and then along Kellogg Drive, and ending at the Garvey Physical Education Center.
“The parade route was lengthened this year to involve more of our Delano neighborhood residents in the Homecoming festivities, as well as accommodate the external community groups that have been invited for the first time to participate,” Tilma said.
In addition to Friends University student groups and alumni, parade participants will include: marching bands from Oxford High School, Wellington High School, and Wichita South High School; mascots from Cox Communications, Red Robin, Texas Roadhouse, the Grove Apartments, and Exploration Place; and community groups that include Empower Martial Arts, the Wichita Swing Dance Society, Girl Scouts, the Midian Shrine Temple; classic cars and motorcycles owners; and KWCH’s Mark Larson and Lana Nash.
Following the parade, a tailgate buffet and children’s carnival will take place on the Garvey Practice Field with the Friends University Jazz Band providing live music.
The culminating event of the afternoon will be the gridiron action between the Friends University Falcons and the Tabor College Blue Jays at 3 p.m. in Adair-Austin Stadium.
