Chapel-Poor Bishop Hooper-The Golgatha Experience

Davis Administration Building, Alumni Auditorium

community Events

Weaving a patchwork of melodies atop an upright bass and a guitar, Poor Bishop Hooper began as a duo. As their love for one another and for the Lord increased, they were called to further steward their gifts for God’s glory, and in increasingly unique ways. Though they still often perform simple tunes in simple places, a vibrant musical ministry has developed around them. It ranges from full band, heavy mood moments like that in the Golgotha Experience, to string and vocal laden scores like that in Firstborn. They’ve performed for thousands around the country, in the largest of concert halls to the smallest of living rooms. They’ve been commissioned to write music by distinguished art museums, underground ministries, and independent artists. Their hearts for the Creator and the endless and bountiful inspiration he provides are ever growing. In turn, their creative projects follow his leading.

Friends University Ballet department presents Choreography Showcase virtually on Oct. 2

Wichita, Kan. – Friends University will present the fall Choreography Showcase, a performance illustrating the creative direction of four talented dancers. The performance will be livestreamed on the Friends University Fine Arts Facebook page, on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m.

The performance will include two pieces conceived as works for the camera and two solos that showcase the choreographers’ craft and interpretation. Additionally, the ballet majors will perform variations from the vast ballet repertoire. The night will end with a group number honoring the late Nancy Stark-Smith’s, Underscore. Stark-Smith was a founding participant of “contact improvisation” and passed away this past May.

“Where you are when you don’t know where you are is one of the most precious spots offered by improvisation. It is a place from which more directions are possible than anywhere else,” said Stark-Smith.

The performance is free to view and will premiere on Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Select “going” to the event to get a reminder when the performance is going live: facebook.com/FriendsFineArts.

Alicina: Fall Opera

fine arts Events

Friends University presents Handel’s opera, Alcina, at the Sedgwick County Zoo Oct. 8, 9 and 11

Wichita- Friends University is excited to announce the upcoming production of Alcina, an opera by G. F. Handel. The performance will take place in-person on Thursday, Oct. 8, Friday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sedgwick County Zoo’s Main Stage.

“You will not want to miss this gripping tale of enchantment and entrapment against the picturesque backdrop of the zoo,” said Gabriel Karst, the opera’s production assistant.

Alcina is based on an excerpt from Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem, Orlando furioso, in which the hero, Ruggiero, arrives on an island enchanted by the sorceress, Alcina. The beautiful Alcina seduces every knight that lands on her island, but soon tires of her lovers and changes them into wild animals, stones or plants. Alcina places Ruggiero under a love spell but soon falls deeply in love with him. When Ruggiero’s betrothed arrives on the island to rescue him, conflict eventually ensues.

Friends University is grateful for our partners at the Sedgwick County Zoo for providing a fitting, beautiful and safe environment for this enchanting production, in addition to partnering with us on our nationally recognized bachelors’ degree program in zoo science. All audience members are asked to wear a mask. An exception will be made if eating from the provided concession stand while maintaining social distance from other patrons.

While the exhibits are closed during the event, some animals may make an appearance to watch the show. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and some tickets may be available to be purchased at the door.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors, students and zoo members. They may be purchased ahead of time by visiting friends.edu/fineartstickets.

The production will feature an English language translation prepared by Amanda Holden for the English National Opera. Dr. Matthew Schloneger is the producer and stage director; Dr. Jamie Knight is the music and orchestra director and Andrea Vazquez-Aguirre is the director of ballet.

For more information on this event or other Fine Arts events, please contact the Fine Arts Box Office at 316-295-5677 or finearts@friends.edu.

_________________________

Friends University will present the classic comedy The Importance of Being Earnest, Thursday, March 11 through Saturday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 14 at 2 p.m.. The spring Theatre production was written Oscar Wilde and is produced by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing, Co.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a charming and witty tale of eccentric ruses, mistaken identity, unrequited love, cherished romance, and family discovery. Oscar Wilde’s clever and infamous story is delivered in present day as the characters share both their fondest ambitions and high-mannered opinions.

Heralded as one of the best plays of the 19th century, the story is often considered a comic masterpiece because of its dynamic wit, uncomplicated plot, while characters both express and learn of each other’s hidden motives, inner desires, and often staunch behaviors. The popular story is a simple snapshot of the never-ending vanity of some of its self-absorbed, high-society members.

Tickets for the virtual performances are free and can be reserved at friendsu.eventbrite.com. Donations are encouraged.

I was born at a refugee camp during the “Killing Fields” in Cambodia. God brought this one year old Cambodian baby to America in 1980. Fast forward 40 plus years or so. I now have had 20 plus years of ministry that have caused me to grow deeply in my faith in Jesus as a follower and leader. My first call to ministry was with God’s House where I started in children’s ministry as an intern, which led me to planting a middle school group, and then a high school group. The past 17 years have been the biggest time of growth. God has used me in a way I never imagined. What a privilege and absolute joy! My beautiful bride Kimberly of 18 years is also in full time ministry (Evangelical Friends Missions). We have four amazing/busy kids Caleb (17), Preston (14), Silas (11), and Gracelyn (5). As a family we enjoy traveling together (like to 18 different baseball stadiums or so) and anyplace that has a nice beach!

Women’s History Month: Grace Ball

Originally from Wichita, Kansas where I grew up in a close and supportive family! I frequently heard about Jesus, but the extent of a relationship with Him was going to church and praying with my family. I began to see a need for God when my mom’s cancer diagnosis hit my family when I was 9, but I still had a false grasp of control on my life. I valued youth group and church activities in high school, but relationships, athletics, and performance were prioritized over a relationship with God. During my freshman year of college, I was playing tennis at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (go roos!) and God began to show me that anything apart from Christ was unfulfilling. In the middle of that year, God saved me from my sin as I trusted in Christ’s finished work on the cross. I developed a new hunger to grow and was discipled by an older woman who invested into me, and God used that to cultivate a passion for ministry. Once I understood God’s heart for discipleship, it changed everything for me. I couldn’t believe that we get to be a part of the Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20) as we go and make disciples. I saw God’s faithfulness not only in the midst of suffering, but also through His people and Church. (Phil 4:19) After completing grad school, I craved to deepen my theology which led me to the Watermark Institute and now on staff here. God allowed a young adults ministry to impact me deeply and it’s a privilege to be here and see Christ working in and through the lives of young adults. In my free time you can find me outside playing pickleball, at a coffee shop, defending why Kansas isn’t that bad of a state…or spending time with my three nephews!

Jacob Vangen

I’m originally from Cincinnati, OH (Skyline Chili for life!) and graduated from high school just across the border in Liberty, IN. In 2015 I graduated from Johnson University in Knoxville, TN with a degree in Youth Ministry, and graduated from Friends University in 2021 with a M.A. in Christian Spiritual Formation and Leadership. After spending six years in New England doing church planting and starting a youth ministry, my wife, Jordan, and I were happy to join Christ Church in the Fall of 2022. We are so grateful to be here; we love the community, Anglican worship, and the focus on living for the sake of others. I’m passionate about Student Life because I found Jesus through an invitation to youth group when I was 13 years old. Investing in middle and high school students is key to the health of the church as a whole. As students face many challenges, both personally and in culture, we get to create a safe, fun, and loving community that teaches them to experience God’s love and practice the way of Jesus in all of life. On a personal note, I love our chocolate lab Jaxon, reading on my porch, and anything to do with Marvel or Star Wars. My hobbies include pickleball, skiing, hiking and running. I’m always game for quality coffee and lingering conversation.
