Message from Lisa Tilma,
Executive Director of Alumni Relations
Earlier this summer, you may recall we shared with our readers that the Kansas Division of Vehicles was scheduled to modernize their computer database system and that an order for the Friends University plates would be placed as soon as their new system went "live" which meant the plates would be available by late fall 2011.
On July 20, 2011, we learned that the state database conversion project had been pushed back to a "go live" date of January 1, 2012. This meant that that production of our plates would most likely start after the "go live" date and the plates would then be available for distribution by late March / early April 2012.
On October 24, 2011, we were able to confirm this information with the Kansas Division of Vehicles. We anticipate keeping our alumni and friends posted as this project moves forward over the course of the next few months.

2011 FAMILY OF THE YEAR AWARD HONORS SCHOONOVER FAMILY MEMBERS
In 2010, an award was created by Friends University in which a special family was selected for their dedication, commitment and years of service to the school. Known as the Family of the Year Award, members of the Joseph and Olive Schoonover family were recognized Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at halftime of the football game.

This very special family first came to know Friends University when five of the ten children of Joseph and Olive Schoonover decided to pursue their academic careers at a relatively new university in the growing town of Wichita, Kan.
In addition to these five children who attended Friends University, there were numerous other family members from their other children who would proudly carry on their family's academic legacy. Overall, the Schoonover family relationship with Friends has encompassed a total of eleven decades, spanned four generations, and for which 24 members have come to call Friends University "home."
STUDENTS AND ALUMNI ENJOY HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES
Many thanks to all of our alumni and their families who were able to come out for Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 1. This year's Homecoming student theme was "Falconopoly: Go directly to Homecoming," and the festivities for the day began with the annual parade that afternoon.
Parade floats included many variations of board games such as "Hungry Hungry Hippos", "Rock'em Sock'em Robots" and even "Mousetrap." Another parade favorite is the alumni motorcyclists and classic car drivers – many thanks to everyone who rode in the parade as we had 22 different cars and bikes come out and "wow" the crowd with exotic paint jobs and loud exhausts.
After the parade, more than 1,350 persons made their way to the Block Party where everyone enjoyed a pre-game tailgate dinner of hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream sandwiches. A free carnival with inflatable rides, face painting, midway games and prizes kept everyone entertained until it was time for the football game where the Falcons would secure a Homecoming win against the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes 63-26.
Prior to the 7 p.m. kick-off, alumni were invited to help sing the National Anthem on the field under the direction of Concert Choir director Rolaine Hetherington.
Special congratulations to Ira Dalbom, son of Michelle Dalbom, G'05, and Marissa Rapp, daughter of Gary Rapp, FS'07! They were selected as the winners of the Homecoming coloring contest and each won a Crayola Color Wonder Sound Studio.
In addition to all the Homecoming fun, the Alumni Association was excited to welcome back to campus the classes of 1961, 1971 and 1986 who celebrated their 50th, 40th and 25th class reunions (respectively). Many thanks to the following alumni who helped plan their special reunions:

Again, thanks to everyone who was able to come out for the day. The Homecoming Committee is in the process of setting a date for the 2012 festivities, and we will be sure to keep you posted in future issues of Friends Flash!.

With the help of the Falcon Athletics Office, the Alumni Association welcomed our alumni athletes who played for the 1974 and 1976 undefeated KCAC Falcon football teams back to Friends University Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011.

Additionally, a golf tournament and social mixer sponsored by football alumnus Chris Goebel, G'77 / M'91, was held the night before at the Rolling Hills Country Club.
"RUNNING WITH FRIENDS" IN THE WICHITA PRAIRIE FIRE MARATHON
Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, approximately 150 Friends University students, faculty, staff, Board of Trustee members, and alumni participated in one of the four Wichita Prairie Fire races (marathon, half-marathon, 5K and 1-mile fun run / walk). Even more members of the Friends community lined the course, cheering on our participants.
Friends University President Dr. T.J. Arant said, "With all our people dressed in red, you can be sure that Wichita took note of Friends University. And when sixty-some of our students crossed the finish line of the 5K in unison, under the watchful eye of Freddy Falcon? You better believe that made a mark!"
In addition to putting together a 150-person team, $206 dollars and 305 pounds of food were collected for the Kansas Food Bank at the Prairie Fire Marathon "Fit for LIFExpo" Saturday, Oct. 8. This equates to 1,059 meals served to people in need!
Plans are currently underway for another "Run with Friends" event in the Wichita area. More information will be shared as the committee moves forward with its planning. By Nancy Hinten, Director of Planned Giving
I'm a big proponent of working efficiently. Some people call that multitasking. However you want to refer to it, it just makes sense to maximize your time. Planning for the future, no matter how uncertain it is, is a good use of time too. So I believe in people having a will and/or trust as well as durable power of attorney for health care and finances.
I'm like most people in that I don't plan on being disabled or dying any time soon. But, I have planned for that scenario with up-to-date documents that will protect my family and our assets in case something does happen unexpectedly.
A lot of people multitask while creating their wills or modifying them by establishing their legacies with Friends University at the same time. The process is straightforward: An attorney prepares the documents for each person – usually both spouses – guiding the method that is most appropriate to their situation. The decisions are clear: Each person outlines who will receive his or her remaining assets through a general bequest, giving specific property, allocating a percentage of the estate, or distributing residual amounts to one more individuals or charities. It isn't complicated, yet many people think it is.
To illustrate the simplicity of this method, let me share a recent example of how a couple established an endowed scholarship fund at the same time they were modifying their wills, which, by the way leaves their current assets untouched while they still need them.
The couple scheduled an appointment with a trusted lawyer because they needed to modify their existing wills due to a change in their circumstances. Not too long ago, they had given money to Friends for scholarship support, so while they were making the changes to their wills, they felt it was a good time to look at establishing a more permanent scholarship fund for future Friends students. They contacted me to talk about doing just that. They explained to me that they didn't have the money now to create an endowed scholarship, but felt there would be sufficient funds later. They wanted to make sure that Friends would receive 100 percent of the remainder to establish the scholarship.
We met, discussed their desired criteria for the scholarship and a few days later the agreement was signed. I sent the information to their attorney so he was able to include the scholarship language along with the other modifications they had communicated to him, and it was done.
Many students in the future will be able to attend Friends University thanks to this couple's thoughtful support. They were smart, using their time and the attorney’s time efficiently and effectively.
For a free guide to planning your will or trust to help you prepare the information for your meeting with a lawyer, simply let me know by calling me at 316-295-5820 and I’ll send you one. It's an easy task to do!
