Friends University hosted a Purple Scramble in its state-of-the-industry INTRUST Bank Cyber Security Laboratory Saturday, Oct. 13. As part of the first cyber security conference in Wichita, the Purple Scramble allowed cyber security specialists to refine their skills. By creating purple teams, in which teams consist of both red (attacking) assets and blue (defending) assets, cyber security experts practiced defending/attacking in a realistic but safe environment. Friends University’s cyber security laboratory is one of only three of its kind in the country in a university setting.
“We are pleased to host OzSec 2018’s Purple Scramble,” said Jonathan Lanning, assistant professor of cyber security and program director of cyber security. “At the end of the day, what matters most is preparing cyber security professionals to ethically and successfully defend their organizations and our nation. Hosting the Purple Scramble in our high-caliber cyber range gives professionals experience using new skills and tools in an environment with minimal consequences before using these skills and tools in a real crisis situation.”
OzSec 2018, the first cyber security conference in Wichita, took place Oct. 12-13 with sessions occurring Oct. 12 and the Purple Scramble Oct. 13. Local cyber security enthusiasts, including John Carney at Koch Industries, created the event to encourage networking and growth in Wichita’s cyber security community.
