Constitution Day event to feature congressional candidates

Friends University will host the three major candidates for Kansas’ 4th Congressional District seat as part of the university’s celebration of National Constitution Day. Congressman Mike Pompeo (R), Dan Giroux (D) and Miranda Allen (I) will present at Friends University Friday, Sept. 16, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in the Davis Administration Building’s Alumni Auditorium.

Congressman Mike Pompeo, a third-term 4th District congressman, is a graduate of the United States Military Academy (West Point) and Harvard Law School. He founded Thayer Aerospace, where he served as CEO for more than 10 years. Congressman Pompeo is on the Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees energy, health care, manufacturing and telecommunications policy, and the House Intelligence Committee, which focuses on America’s intelligence-gathering efforts. In 2014, he was appointed to the House Select Benghazi Committee.

Dan Giroux is a small business owner and managing partner of Dugan and Giroux Law, Inc. He served as a Sedgwick County prosecutor and on the board of the Center of Hope, Inc. He is the cofounder and co-director of the Wichita Gladiator Dash, which has raised more than $250,000 for local charities.

Miranda Allen is the CEO of Radiofrequency Safety International (RSI), which is an environmental health and safety consulting firm. She is a past-president of Barber County Economic Development, Inc., where she helped organize the county to take advantage of growth in the oil and gas industry.

Each candidate will take 15-20 minutes to introduce themselves, talk about their political experiences and discuss the importance of responsible citizenship.

“This event will enable the community to see positive examples of candidates who, despite their major disagreements with each other, all share an appreciation of the seriousness and the importance of being involved in the process,” said Dr. Russell Arben Fox, professor of political science and Model UN sponsor.

Friends University’s Constitution Day event is free and open to the public, and a reception will follow the candidates’ presentations. For more information, please contact 316-295-5827 or foxr@friends.edu.
