Friends University will present “You Can’t Take It with You,” Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, 2016 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.
The story: The hardships of the mid-1930s Great Depression are grinding on, but life at the Sycamores’ old New York house is anything but a hardship. Sure, there are only corn flakes and watermelon in the fridge, but everyone finds ways to enjoy themselves and care for each other. By some standards the Sycamore clan seem bizarre. Daughter Alice hopes her guy’s cultured parents will not disqualify their romantic interests because of her madcap extended family. However, when her fella’ and his wealthy parents show up to dine on the wrong evening, the fireworks begin, literally. The shock convinces Alice that a marriage with Tony couldn’t work. How can anyone ignore the xylophone, the printing press, the homemade candy, the flies for the snakes, the ballet rehearsing, the drunk actress and the fireworks? But, remember, this is comedy. The old chestnut of a play remains one of the most popular and successful plays of modern times.
