Activist Shane Claiborne to speak at Friends University Nov. 1-2

Prominent speaker, activist and best-selling author Shane Claiborne will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, and from 11 to 11:50 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Friends University in the Davis Administration Building’s Alumni Auditorium. Both presentations are free and open to the public.

Claiborne will comment on his life experience, which includes working with Mother Teresa, founding The Simple Way and heading up Red Letter Christians, a movement of individuals who are committed to living “as if Jesus meant the things He said.” Claiborne is a champion of grace and advocates for helping the homeless, ending conflict in war-torn countries and abolishing the death penalty.

“We are very excited to have Shane coming to campus,” said Dr. Guy Chmieleski, campus pastor and dean of campus ministries. “Shane is a thoughtful and engaged Christian who has modeled for so many of us what it means to take seriously the things Jesus said and did – and then attempt to live them out in our own communities. I hope members of our campus community and Greater Wichita will make the time to attend and hear from Shane.”

Claiborne’s books include “Jesus for President”; “Red Letter Revolution”; “Common Prayer”; “Follow Me to Freedom”; “Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream”; “Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers”; “The Irresistible Revolution”; and his newest book, “Executing Grace.” He has been featured in a number of films, including “Another World Is Possible” and “Ordinary Radicals.” Claiborne speaks more than 100 times per year, nationally and internationally.

Claiborne’s work has appeared in Esquire, SPIN, Christianity Today and The Wall Street Journal; and he has been on multiple TV stations, including Fox News, Al Jazeera, CNN and NPR. He has lectured at Harvard, Princeton, Liberty, Duke and Notre Dame. Claiborne speaks regularly at denominational gatherings, festivals and conferences around the globe.
