Friends to offer coding boot camps this July

Beginning this summer, Friends University will offer two new coding boot camps. The first camp, July 9-14, will focus on the programming language of C++, and the second camp, July 16-21, will cover the topics of C# and .NET coding.

Both camps are geared toward adults and high school students who have completed their sophomore year. Successful completers will earn digital badges and earned badges at Friends University are equivalent to academic credit in the College of Adult and Professional Studies’ Computer Information Systems degree. Students will spend six consecutive days (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) focusing on programming in new languages. No programming experience is required.

“The coding boot camps provide an excellent opportunity for students to discover everything from the fundamentals to more advanced concepts,” said Justin Eichorn, the C++ boot camp instructor, assistant professor of cyber defense and program director of adult computer information systems/cyber security. “The immersive learning environment created during the camp will result in the development of a strong set of skills that students will be able to use immediately.”

The C++ digital badges earned include fundamental concepts, troubleshooting and debugging, algorithm development and control structures, data structures, object-oriented designer, and program developer. The C# and .NET badges include advanced concepts, secure design, dynamic programming and interoperability, data systems integration, application performance engineer, and developer.

“We are also looking toward future semesters and brainstorming additional camp options, including options for seasoned professionals and others for high school students,” Eichorn said. “We are excited to begin training and equipping as many coders as possible through these camps.”
