Friends University presents the Concert Band’s opening season concert, Sept. 26

Wichita, Kan, – The Friends University Concert Band will present its opening season concert on Monday evening, Sept. 26, 2022.

Conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of Bands, Shawn M. Knopp, the concert will feature music by Gillingham, Barnes, O’Loughlin and Stalter. “We are excited to open our concert season with a program of contemporary music which features the wonderful musicians in our band,” said Knopp.

A highlight of the concert will include a performance of Randall Standridge’s The Nine. This work was written in honor of the Little Rock Central Nine and the 60th anniversary of the integration of the Little Rock school system.

“This summer I visited the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site and was deeply moved by the experience,” said Knopp. “While standing on the steps of the high school, I felt compelled and excited to share my experience with the surrounding community.”

The Band Concert will take place on Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Allison Traditional Magnet Middle School at 221 S Seneca St, Wichita, KS 67213. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the concert are $6 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. They may be purchased online at friends.edu/fineartstickets or by calling the Fine Arts Box Office at 316-295-5677.
