Young Musicians to Converge on University for 22nd Jazz Festival

Over 850 area high school, middle school, and junior college jazz students will come to Friends University to celebrate the 22nd annual Jazz Festival and perfect their skills with the musical masters at Friends University.

The festival runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 20, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 21 in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Students get to work with renowned jazz guest artists to improve their musical skills. All daytime activities are free and open to the public.

Concert to Feature Friends Alum Dr. Kevin Fenton

Conductor, director, and 1984 Friends University graduate Dr. Kevin Fenton will take the stage as the guest clinician during the annual Choral Connections Concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Riney Fine Arts Center.

Fenton is the conductor of the Florida State University Singers and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. He will lead the vocal talents of area high school and junior college choirs, as well as the Friends University Singing Quakers and Concert Choir in this annual showcase.

Army saxophonist to perform with Concert Band

Alto saxophonist Steve Ticknor will be joining the Friend University Concert Band at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

Major-Sergeant Steve Ticknor is the principal saxophone in the United States Army Band, Pershing’s Own, in Washington, D.C.

In addition to Ticknor’s appearance, the Naval Station Great Lakes Brass Quintet will also perform.

Artist to feature mixed-media creations at Riney Gallery

Visual artist Heather Powell will show off her creations from Jan. 12 to Feb. 13 in the Riney Fine Arts Gallery at Friends University. There will be Final Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 30.

Powell’s exhibit at Friends University will feature mixed media painting and drawing. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

University to spread Broadway’s ‘Good News’ on stage

The Friends University Theatre Department will present the musical comedy “Good News” at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29-31 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

“Good News” is set on a college campus in the madcap 1920s. The big game approaches, but a failing grade looms over the school’s star player. An attractive tutor offers to help, the quarterback falls in love, but with comedy the complications arise before there’s any good news.

Friends University choirs to perform Candlelight tradition

Join the Friends University Singing Quakers as they perform their annual Christmas Candlelight concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5-6, and 2 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium. The Singing Quakers are directed by Dr. Mark Bartel, associate professor of music and director of choral music at Friends University.

The Concert Choir, directed by Rolaine Hetherington, also joins in on this traditional concert. The Singing Quakers will be joined by the Concert Choir, directed by Rolaine Hetherington and the Jazz Vocal Ensemble, directed by Craig Curry.

New Friends Community Orchestra director to make stage debut

Friends University’s Dan Racer, assistant professor of music, will make his stage debut as the new director for the Friends University Community Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

New Friends Percussion Ensemble director to make stage debut

Dr. Von Hansen will make his stage debut as the new director of the Friends University Percussion Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

Dr. Hansen joined the Division of Fine Arts this fall as the percussion instructor.
