Jazz Ensemble Concert to Feature Jeff Clayton

Saxophonist extraordinaire Jeff Clayton will be the featured guest artist with the Friends University Jazz Ensemble I, Jazz Ensemble II and Soulstice at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19. Clayton is from Los Angeles and has worked with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. The concert will take place in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

Singing Quakers to Perform with Wichita Symphony Orchestra

The Friends University Singing Quakers will join forces with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra to present Carl Orff’s epic Carmina Burana at 8 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 17.

The concert will be presented at the Century II Concert Hall in Wichita. Ticket prices range from $17 to $49 for this event and can be purchased through the Wichita Symphony Orchestra Box Office at 316-267-7658.

‘Star Spangled Bandanna II’ to Showcase American Authors

Friends University Theatre will present “The Star Spangled Bandanna II” in place of “The Fantasticks” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16-17 and 2 p.m. Nov. 18. All performances will be held in the Cornerstone Studio Theatre in the Riney Fine Arts Center. Admission is free, but seating is limited.

Works from Edgar Allan Poe, O. Henry, Charles Dickenson, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Dorothy Parker, James Thurber, Carrie Nation and more will be part of this theatre production.

Concert to Feature Chamber Brass Ensembles

Faculty Brass Quintet Concert to Honor Veterans

The Friends University Brass Quintet will pay a tribute to the men and women of the United States armed forces in a concert Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium.

The second half of the concert will feature patriotic music, as well as recognizing men and women in the audience who are active or retired military. The concert is free and open to the public.

Mark Hayes Joins Alumni for Fall Concert

The Singing Quakers Alumni Concert, directed by Dr. Cecil J. Riney, will perform its annual concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10. The singers will be joined by world-renowned composer and writer Mark Hayes. Hayes has succeeded in both sacred and secular choral music fields, including winning a Dove award for his album, “I’ve Just Seen Jesus.”

“We are one of only a few choir groups like this anywhere in the United States,” said board president Scot Pierce. The Alumni Choir is made up of almost 80 voices and orchestra.

Jazz Vocal and Jazz Ensembles Feature Soloist Alexander

Enjoy an evening of jazz featuring the incredibly talented tight harmonies of the Jazz Vocal Ensemble and their special guest vocalist, Earnest Alexander, along with the swingin’ big band sounds of Jazz Ensemble II Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The Jazz Vocal Ensemble, now in its fourth year, has a rapidly growing fan base and is receiving critical acclaim as they prepare for a performance at the national Jazz Education Network conference in Atlanta Jan. 5, 2013.

Fall Chamber Orchestra Concert to Feature Works from Vivaldi, Arvo Pärt and Mozart

This year’s fall concert will feature the Friends University Guitar Ensembles and the Friends University Chamber Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. This free concert will take place in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium and will include senior student soloist Drew Patton, an instrumental music performance major, performing Vivaldi’s “Lute Concerto in D Major.”

Famous Composer to Lead Friends University Concert Band

Sean O’Loughlin, renowned wind band composer, will conduct several of his works with the Concert Band on Mon., Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Riney Fine Arts Center’s Sebits Auditorium. O’Loughlin will be joining the Friends University Concert Band as the 2012 Composer/Conductor-in-Residence. 

O’Loughlin has been commissioned by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Los Angelas Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He also has collaborated with Sarah McLachlan, Adele, Hall and Oates, and Harry Connick Jr.

Ann Krone Named Art Educator of Year

After 44 years of teaching, Ann Krone still looks forward to walking into a classroom. 

“Every day I look forward to teaching because I work with dedicated young people who are enthusiastic about art,” said Krone, adjunct professor of art at Friends University. 

For her efforts in education, the Kansas Art Educator Association has recognized Krone as Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator of the Year for 2012-13. 

Krone stepped into her first art classroom in 1968 in LeMars, Iowa. 

“I taught art, music and drama to elementary students,” she said.
