The Concert Band concerts feature renowned guest artists and some of the greatest new and standard literature from the wind band repertoire. The Friends University Community Orchestra includes students and community members in full orchestra. Chamber ensembles, including the Percussion Ensemble and the Chamber Orchestra offer more opportunities for great music.

CONCERT BAND CONCERT

Larry Clark, renowned band composer and conductor, is appearing as the 2011 Composer and Conductor-In-Residence and will lead the band in several of his own compositions.

FRIENDS UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA CONCERT WITH CHOIRS

America’s rich musical traditions flow from a variety of sources, including folk songs, spirituals, hymns and symphonic music. Come and explore a bit of our nation’s musical heritage as the orchestra joins forces with the 200-voice Friends University Choral Union in a concert entitled, “Made in the U.S.A.” The choir and orchestra will perform Leonard Bernstein’s popular Chichester Psalms (sung in Hebrew) and arrangements of familiar hymns by Mack Wilberg.

FRIENDS UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA CONCERT

This concert, titled “Taste of Italy,” will open and close with music from Italy including Rossini’s delightful overture to The Barber of Seville and Tchaikovsky’s stirring Capriccio Italien. Performances by the Friends University Miller Solo Competition and the Wichita Area Piano Teacher’s League Concerto Competition winners will also be featured, creating a musical fare that is sure to satisfy... think of it as an Italian sandwich!

In this concert, titled “Music Through the Ages,” the audience will experience 300 years of music history as the orchestra performs works from each of the historical periods of western music. Hear Toccata by Frescobaldi, The Marriage of Figaro: Overture by Mozart, Symphony No. 8 in G Major by Dvorak, The Pumpkin Eater’s Little Fugue by Robert McBride, and a work from our present century!
