Friends University named Military Friendly School

Friends University has been designated a 2015 Military Friendly School by Victory Media, an organization that works to connect the military and civilian worlds. The University will also host a Military Appreciation Day Oct. 25 where military personnel and their families can attend the Friends vs. Bethany College football game for free.

The Military Friendly Schools designation is compiled and determined by Victory Media, which provides a transparent, data-driven rating for service members about post-military education and career opportunities. The designation is awarded to the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are embracing military students and dedicating resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.

Linda Stratton, records coordinator in the University’s Registrar Office, says that one program that Friends University participates in is the Yellow Ribbon program.

“It’s a voluntary program that grants additional financial assistance to a select population of GI Bill® students,” she said.

Additionally, Stratton said the University’s flexible curriculum is something that appeals to all students, but is definitely appealing to former and current military members.

“I think our Quaker heritage of acceptance is very important to being a military-friendly school,” she said. “I think the smaller class sizes and individualized attention is a benefit. We also offer online programs that can be completed regardless of moving or deployment.”

Dr. Carole Obermeyer, vice president of student affairs, said the University’s overall culture is one that is welcoming and accommodating to students from various backgrounds.

Faculty and staff have also been trained in the special needs of the military community.

“We recently had a professional development presentation for faculty and staff on how to understand a student veteran’s transition from military to campus life,” said Gary Rapp, assistant dean of student affairs.

As part of the University’s commitment to honor current and veteran service members, all service members and their families will be admitted free to the Falcon football game versus Bethany College at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at Adair-Austin Stadium on the Friends University campus in Wichita.

Friends University offers high-quality undergraduate and graduate academic programs for traditional students and working adults. Rooted both in the liberal arts tradition and the Christian tradition, students learn inside and outside the classroom. Friends University is a regional university with national programs and an international presence.
