Martin Balmaceda

Martín Balmaceda is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre at Friends. He studied theatre at Sarah Lawrence College where he earned a Master of Fine Arts. Professor Balmaceda is an accomplished educator and theatre director with a passion for contemporary and classic plays. His impressive body of work includes numerous adaptations and original productions that have been performed in the USA, Chile, Canada, and Mexico. He previously served as a Senior

Associate Professor and Head of the Theatre Program at Universidad de las Américas Puebla, Mexico, where he taught and directed many successful student productions. Recent productions include An Enemy of the People by Ibsen at The Lee Strasberg Institute in NYC, Medea by Jean Anouilh in Santiago de Chile and in New York, and Acheron: The River of Tragedy, which he directed in Mexico City with XIPE Colectivo Escenico, a group he helped to co-found.

Professor Balmaceda has directed a range of productions at renowned venues such as La MaMa, Bushwick Starr, The New Ohio Theater, Cherry Arts, and BAM among others. In addition to his impressive professional achievements, he received a Best Director ATI award for his production of Yoleros and he is a Lincoln Center Directors’ Lab alumnus.
