Online Learning FAQ

How does Friends define online learning?  What online formats are offered?

Online learning at Friends University includes courses that are taught using technology to facilitate engagement when students and the instructor(s) are physically separated from one another.  The Friends Academic Catalog further defines both Distance Virtual Classes (DVC) and Online Classes (ONL).

What majors are available to study online?

Undergraduate majors offered fully online include Business Administration, Cyber Security, Elementary Education, General Studies, Psychology (Clinical Concentration), and Strategic Leadership.

Will I ever need to come to the campus for courses?

Students who live locally may choose to complete certain courses on campus, but all degrees can be completed at a distance without requiring physical attendance on campus.

Do students complete online courses at their own pace, or are there defined course begin/end dates?

All courses have defined begin/end dates for the fall, spring, and summer terms.  Students are expected to complete coursework at a pace set by the instructor before the course end date.

What is the average class size?

The average online course at Friends enrolls approximately 17 students.

Will I take courses with students who are not enrolled in FriendsFlex?

Classes include a variety of students with a range of experiences.  These may include students residing on or near campus who have enrolled in one or more online courses, as well as non-degree seeking students.

Are online courses taught by full-time faculty?

Many full-time faculty do teach online courses, but courses may also be taught by part-time or adjunct faculty who are working professionals in their field.  Each academic program utilizes a different mix of faculty that is unique to their curriculum and needs.

Is online course content the same as what is offered to face-to-face students?

Courses are expected to fulfill the same learning outcomes and objectives, regardless of their delivery format.  However, courses that are taught in real time will engage students somewhat differently than online courses that have been designed for students to complete their work at any hour of the day.

Are courses taught virtually in real time?

Cyber Security courses are taught in real time (synchronously).  One course in the Elementary Education program is also taught in real time.

Are synchronous classes recorded?

Courses in some programs are offered in multiple delivery formats during a single session/term.  Some courses that are taught in real time, such as in the Cyber Security program, may be recorded for later viewing if students find that they are occasionally unavailable at the scheduled class time.

Can I use military/veteran benefits for online courses?

Yes, but the monthly housing allowance may be limited or unavailable for students who are enrolled in one or more courses online.  See the Friends University Veteran and Military Services webpage for links to additional information.

Can I enroll online from any state or country?

Any student may enroll from locations outside of the United States, but international students residing in the United States may not participate in the FriendsFlex program and are limited to taking courses on campus.  For domestic students, Friends participates in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), which allows online students to enroll from any state except California.

What technology do I need for online courses?

Online students need access to an internet browser, preferably Firefox or Chrome.  Students enrolled in DVC courses taught in real time may also need a webcam to engage with the instructor and classmates.

What learning management system does Friends use?

Friends uses Moodle as its LMS.  A mobile app for Moodle called Open LMS is also available.

What software does Friends use for video conferencing and/or chatrooms?

Friends University generally uses Microsoft products, so Microsoft Teams may be used for video and/or chats.  However, most faculty use Zoom to facilitate regular interaction in their synchronous (DVC) courses.

Is there an orientation to online courses available?  Is it required?

Friends offers an optional Student Orientation through its learning management system, Moodle.  It provides an introduction to the LMS and common types of online activities, such as uploading assignments, contributing to discussion forums, and taking quizzes.

How will I complete exams in an online course?  Is there a testing center available?

Friends uses a lockdown browser in certain online courses.  Students may choose to make appointments to take exams in the Academic Resource Center on campus, as needed.

How can I receive support for the following: academic advising, library services, career services, tutoring, and writing support?
